Don't blame the schools for these people's failure to apply the knowledge properly. Without any other knowledge of their educational backgrounds, you cannot know whether the schools failed them or whether they failed themselves with a lack of effort.
They seem unteachable - the guy is trying to teach them what is wrong with their mode of thinking, and they trust the computer printout rather than math and common sense. That may be an educational issue, but it's also one that's endemic in the computer age. See "people who listen to their GPS and drive into train tracks, lakes, etc."
